What you need to know about planning a Los Cabos family vacation

Los Cabos is one of those destinations that just checks all the boxes for families. They have over 25 swimmable beaches, endless activities to suit every desire, from the aquatic lover to the culturally immersed, and perhaps most importantly, a quick flight from many West Coast cities, such as Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Salt Lake City. Because, if you’re like me, you’re always looking for a quick weekend getaway, even if it’s international.

You can be in Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula in just a few hours, making it perfect for everything from a long weekend to a full family vacation.

While warm weather is a huge draw, many families still wonder: Is it safe? Will it be easy to get around with kids? What’s the best way to plan our stay? I’ll tell you that Los Cabos is easily our family’s favorite destination in Mexico. After visiting several times, I can confidently say that Los Cabos is one of Mexico’s most popular, safest, and kid-friendly resort destinations, especially when you plan ahead and know the facts. So, first, we’re answering some of your most common questions.

Is Los Cabos Safe for Families Right Now?

Yes! Los Cabos is considered one of the safest destinations in Mexico for tourists, including families with children. The Los Cabos Tourist Corridor spans 33 kilometers and features some of the best accommodations, food, and experiences dedicated to tourism. The area is designated with a strong security presence, well-developed infrastructure, and resorts that prioritize the safety of their guests. Find out more information HERE.

As with any destination, it’s important to remain aware of your surroundings, stay in designated tourist areas and use reputable transportation services. For our last few trips to Los Cabos, we relied on TransCabo/Cabo Planners.

Their services are top-notch for airport transfers or getting around the city to explore. Guests have the option to choose a group shuttle or a private experience. The ride was comfortable, air-conditioned and made getting around Los Cabos a breeze with our son.

Los Cabos family vacation | What is the Best Month to Go to Los Cabo?

While Los Cabos is a year-round destination, according to Google, the best months for families are typically from November to May. This time of year offers pleasant weather (mid-70s to mid-80s), low humidity, and a smaller chance of rain. However, we have always traveled to Los Cabos in the summer. Coming from Las Vegas, the desert heat is something we’re accustomed to, and we enjoy a less crowded vacation.

Is Los Cabos Good for Families?

Every time we’ve gone to Los Cabos, it has been an incredible experience for the entire family. Everyone is warm and welcoming to kids. With a driver, it’s easy to navigate, and most family-focused resorts are designed with families in mind. Many accommodations offer amenities such as kids’ clubs, children’s pools, and family-sized suites.

Los Cabos Family Vacation: Where to Stay

Los Cabos is a paradise for vacation lovers. Whether you’re a hotel lover who enjoys the amenities of an all-inclusive resort or someone who enjoys a private, cozy getaway in a vacation rental, Los Cabos has something to meet your family’s needs. On our most recent trip to Los Cabos, we had the chance to experience both an all-inclusive and a vacation rental. Below, I’m sharing my thoughts on both.

Krystal Grand Los Cabos| A Family-Friendly All-Inclusive Resort

guide to los Cabos family vacation

If you’re looking for a resort in Los Cabos that combines luxury amenities with an affordable price tag, Krystal Grand Los Cabos should be on your list. It’s one of the best value all-inclusive resorts in Cabo, especially for families who want both convenience and comfort without breaking the bank.

Krystal Grand Rooms

During our stay, we booked the Altitude Tower’s Junior Swim-Out Suite with an ocean view. The room was incredibly spacious, but the real showstopper was the view.. Staying in the Altitude Tower also comes with upgraded perks, including access to exclusive dining options, private lounge areas, and elevated service, which really make it feel like a hidden oasis within the resort.

Krystal Grand Amenities

When you’re not relaxing in your room, the property has plenty to keep everyone entertained. There are four different pool areas, each with ocean views, including the adults-only Altitude pool, which offers a quieter vibe for those seeking a more serene experience. Down by the beach, you’ll find Bali beds where you can stretch out under the sun while . An attentive service staff brings drinks and snacks right to your chair.

One of the highlights of staying here is the all-inclusive package. Most meals, snacks, and drinks are included in your room rate. This allows you to eat and drink freely without needing to constantly reach for your wallet. The resort has five full-service restaurants, two snack bars, and five bars, so there’s always something new to try. In my opinion, the specialty restaurants are definitely the standouts. However, the buffet is a bit more hit or miss which is typical of all-inclusive dining.

More notable amenities include a kids club, on site spa, coffee shop, evening lawn movies and daily activities.

What you need to know

The location is another big plus. The resort sits just 20 minutes from Los Cabos International Airport, making it a convenient if you’re traveling with kids.

As for cost, rates typically start around $300 USD per person, depending on the season and room type. This is an excellent mid-range choice for travelers on a budget.

Overall, Krystal Grand Los Cabos offers the best of both worlds. It’s affordability and luxury with enough variety to keep both parents and kids happy throughout the stay.

Cabo Villas| Vacation rentals for families and group trips

the best los Cabos family vacation villa, Cabo villas Isabel

As someone who usually stays at hotels, I wasn’t sure if a villa could really compare. However, staying in one completely changed the way I view vacation rentals.

Villa Ysabel | Cabo Villas

One of my favorite experiences was at Villa Ysabel, a five-bedroom villa managed by Cabo Villas Vacation Rentals. It’s located in Pedregal, one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Cabo San Lucas. Just 30–45 minutes from Los Cabos International Airport, Pedregal is known for its hillside villas, panoramic ocean views, and some of the best sunsets you’ll ever see.

This particular villa features five bedrooms, spread across three private casitas, four bathrooms, two kitchens, and a private pool, making it an ideal option for extended family trips or groups of friends. The layout provides everyone with ample space and privacy while still allowing them to be together under one roof.

Villa Ysabel Amenities

Guests have access to everything you’d expect from a luxury stay, including a heated pool and Jacuzzi, high-speed Wi-Fi, a fully stocked kitchen with cooking tools and dishes, and even housekeeping services to keep the space fresh throughout your trip. The villa also comes with 24/7 concierge support to assist with everything from activity bookings to grocery deliveries. Staying here also gives you access to the neighborhood’s private clubhouse, fitness center, and pickleball courts, and the best part is that you’re still within walking distance to both a swimmable beach and downtown Cabo San Lucas.

If you want to elevate your stay even further, you can add on in-villa spa treatments or book a private chef to prepare authentic Mexican meals or gourmet dining experiences without ever leaving the property.

One of the best aspects of staying in Pedregal is the peace of mind it offers. The neighborhood is guard-gated and patrolled 24/7, with a mix of full-time residents and vacationers. It feels like a private escape, but you’re still just minutes from Cabo’s famous marina, nightlife, and restaurants.

If you’ve ever traveled with a big family, you know how expensive multiple hotel rooms can get. A villa like this can actually be a better value when you factor in space, privacy, and the ability to cook meals together. Plus, having your own pool and kitchen makes it feel less like a vacation rental and more like your own personal resort

Los Cabos Family Vacation: Things to do

After booking your trip and accommodations, planning your excursions is the last step to the perfect getaway. You’ll find that Los Cabos has a plethora of things to do for families. Depending on the time of year that you visit, excursions can range from whale watching to cultural activities. The opportunities are endless but you’ll need to know where to look.

Cabo Pirates by Wild Cabo Adventures: A Family-Friendly Dinner Show at Sea

yoho show by Cabo pirates los Cabos family vacation

Looking for a fun and unique family activity in Los Cabos? There’s a sunset dinner show in Cabo San Lucas with breakdancing pirates, stunts, and fire tricks. Plus, its paired with a surprisingly delicious BBQ dinner.

This is the Yo Ho Show with Cabo Pirates aboard the historic Buccaneer Queen by Wild Cabo Adventures, and it’s easily one of the best excursions for families in Cabo.

The evening begins as you board the pirate ship and are welcomed with fresh fruit juices and elotes served as appetizers. From there, the ship sets sail, giving you the perfect opportunity to capture the iconic Arch of Cabo San Lucas just before sunset. This is a a must-do for any first-time visitor.

As the sun sets, dinner is served. The BBQ meal is hearty and flavorful, but the real highlight is the entertainment that follows. The crew puts on a high-energy show complete with a fun storyline, fire dancing, acrobatics, breakdancing pirates, and even a live DJ. The performers do an incredible job keeping the crowd engaged, making it as entertaining for kids as it is for adults.

Once the main show wraps up, the party isn’t over. The ship comes alive with music and dancing as you cruise back toward the marina. The entire experience feels like a mix between a sightseeing cruise, a live performance, and a family night out. It was easily a highlight of our trip, and it’s a perfect way to enjoy both dinner and a show while taking in the Cabo coastline.

Tickets are $99 USD per adult and $49 USD per child, which makes it a solid value considering you’re getting a cruise, a meal, and live entertainment all in one.

Insider tips for families booking this excursion

  • Book ahead: The show is popular, especially during peak travel seasons and holidays, so reserve your spot early.
  • Arrive a little early: Boarding is smooth, but arriving 20–30 minutes before departure ensures you get settled and have time for pre-show photos.
  • Dress comfortably: The evening breeze on the water can be cool after sunset, so bring a light jacket or sweater.
  • Pick your seats wisely: Sitting closer to the center of the deck gives you the best view of the performance.
  • Consider motion sickness: The waters are generally calm, but if anyone in your family is prone to seasickness, taking motion-sickness tablets beforehand is a good idea.

More Family-Friendly Things to Do in Cabo San Lucas

While Cabo Pirates is certainly one of our favorite experiences especially with children, there are so many more attractions available  Families also love:

  • Glass-bottom boat tours to see the marine life up close and circle around the Arch.
  • Snorkeling trips to Santa Maria Bay or Chileno Bay, both calm, swimmable beaches perfect for beginners.
  • Wildlife encounters like whale watching (in season from December to April) or swimming with dolphins at a local marine sanctuary.
  • Beach time at Medano Beach, where the waters are swimmable and there are plenty of restaurants and activities nearby.
  • Adventure parks just outside Cabo, offering ziplining, camel rides, and off-road tours for families with older kids.

After traveling to Los Cabos on several occasions, its become one of our most beloved family travel destinations. Not only has it been easy to travel to but with such a warm and inviting culture, incredible cuisine and views that look like postcards, its no wonder west coasters choose Los Cabos time and time again for their travels.
